Challenges and Opportunities for Research on Same-Sex Relationships
Although it is commonly believed that gays and lesbians are more racially open-minded than straights, this appears to be true only for lesbians. Generally, white gay men and straight women avoid non-white daters. In a study published in the upcoming issue of the journal Social Forces , UMass Amherst associate dean Jennifer Lundquist and University of Texas Austin assistant professor of sociology Ken-Hou Lin analyzed the racial characteristics of 9 million registered users and million messages from one of the largest and most popular U. The final sample consisted of data from 32, lesbians, 51, gay men, , straight women and , straight men taken from November to October In this study they examine the preferences of white daters; their ongoing research also examines the racial preferences of non-white daters. They found that same-race preferences are common, but when people decide to contact daters of a different race there is no clear tendency by gay or straight identity. Minority men are less desired by white gay men and straight women, while minority women suffer far less of a penalty from white lesbians and straight men. The study found some variations in the specifics of interracial relationships. In regards to contact with Asian daters, straight men and lesbians are more likely to interact with Asians than other minorities, while straight women and gay men are less likely. Specifically, straight white men are the most likely group to initiate contact with Asian daters and lesbians and straight men are most likely to respond to messages from Asian daters.

And of all those who are tied down to committed relationships, we can think of very few interracial partnerships within the mix. But to be automatically rejected due to preconceived notions about who someone is sexually, or their gender identity, or the colour of their skin is just wrong. And this usually means they have already decided who that person is long before giving them a fair chance. However, there is still a visible divide among lesbians and that probably has more to do with the fact that the most visible lesbians are still those highly representative of the white middle to upper classes.
Rarely do we see lesbians of colour accurately or well represented within LGBT community.

Lesbian relationships can be great. But they can also be messy things. Women of color have been talking about it for decades, and some of the most valuable feminist writing on sexual politics has been written by lesbians of color. And yet het female friends will say to me, not quite joking, that lesbian relationships must be easier since both people in the relationship are women.
Both being positioned as women in this world creates a level of shared understanding. But the politics of difference can still be a challenge in lesbian relationships. British women do twice as much housework as British men, missing out on an estimated five hours of leisure time every week as a result.

A little over a year ago, I got together with a group of fellow black, gay friends in Chicago and decided to try and throw a monthly brunch that was exclusively for men who looked like us. For months, it kept growing without fail. People could invite whomever they wanted, but the main rule was, for the first few hours, the space had to be only men that identified as black and gay, and that other people could join after 3pm. Over time, the brunch become a safe space for us, who generally felt like we had none — not in LGBT spaces, and not in black ones.
Brunch is our place to breath a little easier. Recently, one of the people that is a leader in making this brunch continue — now with less frequency — and I were talking about the love lives of the men involved. While same-sex marriage is a fairly recent development — it just became legal nationwide in late June — we do have some data that gives insight into potential trends within the make-up of same-sex couples.
And surprisingly, they look to already be more diverse — racially — than their heterosexual counterparts. It could be, he said, that a smaller pool of potential partners makes LGBT people less hesitant to date someone from a different ethnicity or culture. The LGBT community — most specifically, the gay, male community as a whole — has come under fire lately for minimizing the racism that has long pervaded its ranks, with some Pride celebrations disrupted by Black Lives Matters representatives, there to remind the gay community of its racially diverse roots.
Oh, and the constant obsession with painting black people as more homophobic even though most all anti-gay policies and laws have been led by white men. So this idea — that LGBT minorities may be more comfortable being in relationships with white people than straight ones, even though the greater gay community has long been exclusionary — is bizarre and deserves some meditation.
We as gay men, as people who have been fighting for so long to be seen as deserving of equality, have decided that we were willing to bring racism forward as long as what we imagined to be homophobia lessened.
